More on the Journey of J-Boys

Posted by Deborah Iwabuchi, Maebashi

Like all books, translated literary works go through extensive revisions as they are edited, but solitary translators often do not get a close look at this process. Finally, an opportunity!

On Dec. 6, 2011, SCBWI translator Avery Fischer Udagawa spoke about her journey with the book J-Boys: Kazuo’s World, Tokyo, 1965 by Shogo Oketani (Stone Bridge Press, 2011). If you missed the event, you can now read Avery’s article about it on the SWET website. (Read more on J-Boys in this post!)

J-Boys was originally intended to be a YA or adult work, but was ultimately released as a middle grade (MG) novel–a greater leap than one might imagine. Avery’s article covers the process and offers a look behind the editorial scenes, including before-and-after versions of several chapter endings.
